China has been striving to attract more tourists ever years and it is certainly trying to make it easy for those who will be already traveling through their main airports. Stays up to 72 hours without a visa have been a reality already for citizens of selected groups of nationalities in Beijing and Shanghai. Since this past month of August 2013, Guangzhou is as well granting this privilege to certain travelers.
Citizens from 72 countries, transiting through Baiyun International airport can choose to stay in Guangzhou for up to three days. It is important to keep in mind that a continuation ticket will be expected to be in one’s possession at the moment of entering the country. At the same time one should have already in order any visa or other documents that may be needed to enter the next destination. It does not matter on which airline one is arriving or continuing the trip.
It is necessary to follow a registration process with the local police up to 24 hours after one has entered Guangzhou, but no worries! This process happens automatically when the check in at a hotel is done, one only needs to go physically to the police station if the place of lodging is the house of friends or relatives.
One has to be clear to the airline the intention of such a stopover when the reservation is done. The process is quite straightforward. It is important to keep in mind that it is better to reserve a flight that is actually leaving little bit before the 72 hours are up, to avoid misunderstandings. In case of a cancelation of the flight and one being forced to stay longer there is the need to apply for a visa in the local police station. The rules of this program are quite strict and there are high fines and even deportation without authorization to re-enter the country in the future for those who intentionally overstay.
