How to travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

DXB

Traveling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is extremely easy and very affordable. There are several possibilities and travelers can choose from whatever mode of transportation is more convenient for their travel plans.

Taxi:

If one is arriving to Dubai International Airport between 11 pm and 6 am, the only available option is a taxi, unless one is renting a car. A cab from the Airport to Abu Dhabi costs around 300 Dhs each way. It is a very safe way to travel.

Bus:

Buses depart every 20 minutes from the Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai. The Al Ghubaiba Metro station is just couple blocks away, so it is possible to arrive there from the International Airport using the Metro. The buses are quite luxurious, with air conditioning, the price is 25 Dhs and return from Dubai 15 Dhs. This route is operated in conjunction with the Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Transport authority, the buses belonging to the Abu Dhabi company charge 15 Dhs each way. The first bus departs at 6 am and the last one at 11 pm. From Abu Dhabi the buses depart from the terminal located on the corner of Hazza bin Zayed the First (11th) St and East (4th). The bus normally makes a stop close to Yas Island on its way from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. It is good to keep in mind that front seats are always reserved for women and families, the seats on the back are for men only.

Etihad coach Service:

Passengers flying with Etihad in Economy can take advantage of the free coach service that this company offers to and from Abu Dhabi. A reservation has to be done 24 hours before the trip on their website or by calling their offices.

Car Rental:

These are normally affordable, and gas is as well very cheap. There is free parking almost anywhere in the Emirates, including hotels and shopping centers. It is important know that there are five electronic tolls in Dubai, so ask about it, otherwise your credit card will be charged automatically. There are always good parallel highways that are toll free in Dubai, and to keep in mind that it is necessary to have an international drivers license along with the regular drivers license, this rule is enforced even more if ones drivers license is not in English. We found easier to rent a car in Dubai than in Abu Dhabi, but it is not very difficult in either of the two airports.

Abu Dhabi to Dubai in Bus

In order to move from Abu Dhabi airport to Dubai (in the case that you do not have the free shuttle that Etihad passengers enjoy) You will first take the A1 bus from any of the terminals at Abu Dhabi airport in the direction of the city. Get off the bus at the Al Wahda Sultan Bin Zayed 1st St / Bus Station, it is a 35 minute ride, the buses run 24 hours a day, every 40 minutes and cost 4 AED.
Once at the Abu Dhabi bus terminal you can catch buses to Dubai between 6am and 11pm daily. Buses cost 25 AED and the trip is 2.5-3 hours. In this direction the Bus E100 leaves every 10 min and takes you to northern Dubai and E101 leaves every 30 min and takes you to Ibn Battuta Mall which is right near the metro from which you can branch out into all Dubai.

I love to travel, it is a hobby that has been with me since I was a little child. Already as teenager I went around South America as a backpacker. Now I travel in a very different way, I like to think that I am a more discerning traveler, but I still enjoy the simple things of life.

Agree with the opinion that car rental is a good option for travelling in UAE due to low prices for fuel.
I’ve tried hiring a car during my trip to Abu Dhabi two years ago.
So, there are few drawbacks self-driving in UAE in case you don’t have enough driving experience (dense traffic and very strict driving laws for tourists)

Nevertheless, everything was OK during my journey 🙂
In case you want to save some extra money, it is convenient to use car rental comparison services like https://rental24h.com/uae to pick up the best car rental offer

It is my second time visiting Dubai (in April) and this time I am planning to visit abu dhabi for a day. Are there any private operators who I can use to taxi be around for the day? What would the charges be on average?

The bus options seems appealing too but I am not as confident. Where is the bus stop in Dubai to travel to Abu dhabi? How long will the bus journey take? Would it be cheaper to take a bus and then use a taxi in and around Abu Dhabi?

My aim is to see the Shk Ziyad Mosque and the Palace.

    Thanks

      Hi Suhail,

Buses are abundant and affordable in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, they are clean new and air conditioned. Of course in Abu Dhabi itself if you’d like to be more efficient with time take a taxi. Prices are not cheap but they are not exorbitant like in many major cities. To be honest we recommend Uber it is very easy to use and the rates will be competitive for any journey around the city you wish to take. Many hotels and coffee shops have free wifi too.

For the places to take the buses between Dubai and Abu Dhabi please refer to the article. Local buses and metros arrive very close to these inter city bus stations.

Please be careful as you make travel plans to Dubai as I was robbed using one of those well dressed non cabbies for a day outside the airport in Dubai! They are men dressed to the T’s and they use regular current year vehicles which are rented and shared amongst a few men, on a who catches the first fish (ride). I used one as he seemed pretty cool to get to my hotel room nearby and he offered to show me around for a day. He took me to a bar which turned out to be a whore house “Club York” then shopping in a dirty part of Dubai where I was taken to a atm only bank which was surrounded by quite a few guys and forced to max out my atm daily limit. Be care safe travels

When I take it by land (bus or taxi) do I need to bring my passport for stamp? Immigration check etc?

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Mikey,

You will need some form of ID to purchase bus tickets, taxi probably not. However it is always advisable to have your passport on you in any type of transportation as in any country you travel to it is your primary source of valid identification. It will not be stamped however moving between the various Emirates, only on entry and exit.

Are there taxis or coaches that accommodate for disabled children. My daughter is 6 and is wheelchair bound therefore I need to know if there is the proper support available that is needed. Thanks in advance.

    Saima

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Saima,

We have not seen taxi vehicles which specifically cater to disabled persons but they may indeed be available. The Emirates has a good infrastructure overall. Perhaps you may contact the airport or a taxi company for a specific need. If you simply arrive there are larger taxi vehicles available which should be able to accommodate a chair.

I will arrive abu dhabi at 8am apr 6th i have to go to stay in dubai for 2 xaus then catch my plane on the 8th of april to LAX i have two lugges is it allowed to carry them on the bus to dubai ?

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Faris,

We could not find any luggage restrictions online and our past experience has shown plenty of luggage space on the bus when transiting. It seems likely you can bring both bags, but perhaps have some cash on hand in case there is a fee.

Hi, we are a couple and are visiting Dubai from USA. We want to do a day trip to Abu Dabhi, to visit the Emirates Palace and Ferrari world only. Taking taxis are costlier from what I see. I read the above article and appreciate your details mentioned. So since the Ferrari world only opens at 11 AM, can I take a bus from Dubai at around 8 AM, get down at the Ferrari World, finish it, and then take a taxi to Emirates Palace early evening, and once done, take the bus back to Dubai? We will be staying at Grand Hyatt Dubai for our visit. Appreciate your response.

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Vck,

That itinerary sounds very doable for the day. The E102 bus runs 06:20 till 21:40 from Abu Dhabi to Dubai daily at 20-40 minute intervals (depending on if if is a weekday or holiday). Just be sure you get back to the bus station in time for the last bus, but you should have plenty of time to visit both attractions.

I have a flight arriving arriving 19.40 Dubai and need to get across to the Fairmont in Abu Dhabi – what would you suggest is the best way at that time of evening as I probably won’t make it through customs until 20.30. Taxi around 300 AED?

    Many thanks

    James

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi James,

We are not sure of the taxi cost, but it would probably be the most direct way to get to Abu Dhabi. There are shuttle services and buses available as well but these would take more time.

      Hi Vipul,

You can see all the answers to your questions in the article above. Take the metro from Dubai airport to the main bus station. The ride takes around 2.5 hours to Abu Dhabi for around 25 AED and from there you can take a taxi or local bus to your hotel.

    Hello,
I have booked an Emirates Airline flight that involves a 1h45min bus route from Dubai to Abu-Dhabi. Is it the same bus as in the article? Or is it going straight from the airport?
In my boarding pass it is listed as an Emirates Airline bus, and I have it both ways: Dubai-Abu-Dhabi and Abu-Dhabi-Dubai.
    Appreciate your help!

    Hi ,

I have to go to Abu Dabhi masdar institute of science in Sunday morning at 11 am. I would be staying at four points by Sheraton at sheikh zayad road. Could you please guide which metro station should I go to in order to catch the bus. And from there where do I go to catch the bus.

    Cheers

      voyageur

      Dear Usama,

We recommend you proceed to Emirates Towers Metro Station 1 and proceed towards Al Ghubaiba Metro station. From there follow signs to the nearby Al Ghubaiba bus stop. The buses depart regularly for Abu Dhabi.

      Hi Himakshi,

We are not certain but it may apply to Etihad flights only. Just because an airline is owned or majority controlled by another doesn’t mean their privileges extend to all affiliates. We recommend you call and confirm with Etihad.

    Hi,

There is 10 of us staying on the Palm Dubai and we are looking to visit Abu Dhabi, to see the mosque, Ferrari world and the palace if time permits, returning back to Dubai the same day.

What would be the best way of doing this?
Other than bus is there a private hire (minibus) that can take us on a tour, what would the price be

    Thank you in advance

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Cas,

Tours like that are abundant and often through prepackaged companies, but if you call them some of them they will drop the prearranged itinerary and just provide the transit. Go Dubai is one such option as well as arabian-adventures. The best way would be to call the tour companies or email them about what you want in an itinerary and confirming the final cost.

Hi, I am arriving with my wife (Etihad) in Abu Dhabi at 6AM and have almost 20hrs free time till next connection from the same airport. We would like to see mostly Dubai (main sites) and if time allows, the Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Given the short time, what would be the best way of transportation and organizing the trip? Should I contact some agency in Dubai for a city tour? I would greatly appreciate your advice.

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Andrew,

We would recommend that with that amount of time you might hire a private car or taxi so as to make the most of your trip. If you have never been to either city or you aren’t into do it yourself travel that much the best way to use the 20 hours in both cities would be to head to Dubai first and make your way back to Abu Dhabi in time for your final flight.

    hi

Im looking to go to abu dhubi in August for one day. im coming from dubai and liked to know if there was a metro service that ran from dubai to abu dhabi.

What would be the best way and cheapest.
im in the but dubai area(golden sands) and want to see the mosque in abu dhabi and maybe the palace.
Whats the best place to catch a bus and do you know once at abu dhabi how much will a taxi roughly charge to get me to the mosque?
    any info will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Liaqat,

There is no metro service between the two cities, the fastest and cheapest way as explained in the article is to go on the buses between the two cities. Taxi far in Abu Dhabi is hard to estimate exactly, but it is more affordable than many other major cities.

      voyageur

      Hi Larry,

Yes the Dinar is the same in all of the seven emirates, you can use that same currency with ease in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It is recommended to have your passport on you when traveling as it is your primary form of identification.

    Hi

I wanted to know how go from Dubai to Abu Dhabi? 1 day visit and what the best way to get there and how much it would cost?

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

It depends what your timeframe and budget is Ali. If you want to save money the buses we mentioned in this article are a good way to visit, but it will take more time going to the bus terminals.

If you have more money to spend but you want to save on time we recommend you rent a car or look for a taxi/driver service for your day tour.

    Hi there,

We are two on a honeymoon. We arriving at Dubai Intl airport terminal 3 on Tues Sept 20th 18:35. We need to travel to Abu Dhabi and check into Fairmont Al Babr in Abu Dhabi.

Emirate’s offers a bus service courtesy from Emirates and the last one leaves at 19:00 from Terminal 3 towards Abu Dhabi.
Since it is our first time arriving in Dubai, it might take us longer to get out and hop onto the Bus at 19:00.

We can pray and hope our flight arrives earlier than 18:35 so we can get on that bus. However, if we don’t make it on time… what is the best service/route you suggest for a newly wed couple who wants to truly enjoy U.A.E.

I would of stayed in Dubai on the night we arrive, but we also wanted to check Abu Dhabi out so we are going there first but then coming back to Dubai to enjoy the rest of our vacation.

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Ali,

If you cannot make the bus we recommend that you get a rental car or hire a car/taxi that goes between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The beauty of a rental car is that they are affordable, gas is cheap, hotels have free parking and the highway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is only a 2 hour ride and in excellent condition. It really gives you the freedom to move around and parking is never an issue.

Hi! Could you recommend a reliable car rental with a driver for our family? We would like to make a day trip to Abu Dhabi and just take in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Emirates Palace and Ferrari World. Is this doable in one day? We were planning to take the 1 hour guided tour through the Mosque, lunch at Emirates Palace and spend the rest of the day at Ferrari World. Is any of these destinations out of the way? Would appreciate your comments and suggestions.

The best way to get between both cities is to go to the central bus terminals. The way to and from the bus terminals on both sides can be done through a taxi or more affordably city buses. You will have to ask the concierge there for specific routes serving these hotels.

Hello! We will be in Dubai on Feb 1, 2017 and would love to take a day trip to Abu Dhabi on Feb 2. Interested in the Mosque and the Palace. I guess the most economical option would be bus, close second Uber, correct? What order do you recommend we visit and how long do you think the visit in each place will take approximately? Thanks in advance!

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Jessica,

Those would be the most cost effective ways in order. The Mosque is closer to the highway coming from Abu Dhabi we suggest you go there first and from there go to the Palace. It is doable in a day. The mosque will take you no more than 1 hour and the palace can be around an hour as well. The time to get between each is around 25 minutes in a car.

Is renting a private car a reasonable and safe idea. (One place we saw required payment at booking and stipulated that they would leave the port if you didn’t show up within 15 minutes of the designated time with loss of the full fair).

Can one reserve a cab to meet them at the ship’s birth?

    Thanks,
    SD

      Hi Shane,

We have not experienced this method of transport. However it seems reasonable you can find a cab or car service to meet you there. If you review companies online and even contact one directly it would be best. We will appreciate if you follow us in Facebook and in Twitter

    Hello (^_^)/

Do we need to use a bus card when taking a bus from Dubai to Abu-Dhabi?.. Thank you.

Usually it is just a one time ticket you purchase
