A practice that travelers coming out of Costa Rica often forget or are unaware of altogether is payment of a departure tax.
In the past it has was applicable to everyone leaving the country and it was not included in any airline tickets or fees. It still is for some airlines.
Starting November of 2014 and gaining more clarity in March of 2015 some of the rules and regulations changed:
Tickets bought on or after March 23 with an exit date of after June 14 will have the exit tax already included in the ticket price for American and US Airways.
Copa Airlines also plans to bundle the price into their tickets applicable to passengers who have a flight out after June 14, but they have not yet clarified from how long before the ticket was purchased this applies to.
Upon departure from an International Airport such as San Jose or Guanacaste . It sits all the way on the right hand side of the departures terminal and moves quite quickly, although it can get full in high season. The cost is $29USD per person and is payable in US Dollars or Costa Rican Colones or by major credit card. Be advised if you pay via credit card the charge will be processed like a cash advance. The receipt is important to keep with you until check in is complete. Pay inside the terminal only, this is the only valid place to do so.
