High altitude: how to deal with it

We do not intend to give personal medical advice with our tips, anyone who believes that this effect of nature can be an issue should consult a doctor ahead of time, it can be a serious and life threatening issue.


We have experienced altitude in Peru India and Andorra and in the best of cases it can be bothersome. It typically affects people who arrive to places above 2500m or ascend more than 1500m in a short time. IT is said that it affects men more than women, elderly and the unfit more than fit and anyone can be a victim.


Effects of altitude sickness


It typically manifests with a headache, the sensation of pressure, gastrointestinal problems, vomiting and extreme tiredness. Some people can feel it upon arrival and in many occasions it manifests on the second day.

-Its important to read and learn but not to think too much about it, worrying only increases oxygen consumption

-It is vital to prepare oneself with physical regimen, beforehand, weeks before the trip

-A couple days before arriving to the place try to drink lots of water to eat light and to avoid coffee and alcohol

  • It is better to do a gradual ascent by driving or bus than in plane especially if moving from very low altitudes
  • If one is flying once the plane arrives sit  breathe deep and avoid fast movements
  • once at the place dedicate the first day to rest
  • If one is going to explore it has to be light and slow and not carrying heavy backpacks etc.
  • In countries like Bolivia and Peru, coca tea also known as mate is very helpful to relax.

The first night one can have trouble sleeping, chamomile tea can be a good thing and trying to dress well is a good idea because it can increase the symptoms. Try to breathe deep and slow if you awake at night and try to fall asleep again.


In case of pain and headache an analgesic can be a good thing always having consulted with a physician first, even if one feels perfectly ok on the first day it is always good to rest and avoid heavy exercise during the first week.


If symptoms like disorientation and pain press than call upon a doctor because it can be a life threatening condition, most of the time it can be solved by oxygen or removing oneself 300m down from the altitude or more. With good preparation and attention it can be handled well but it needs to be respected for sure.
