Ferry options between Helsinki Finland and Tallinn Estonia

tallinn

The Scandinavian and Baltic countries are Northern Europe’s scenic frontier. Visitors to the area can enjoy a variety of diverse cultures and artistic capitals within a good proximity of each other. When visiting Tallinn Estonia or Helsinki Finland, it is very easy and enjoyable to take a ferry over the Baltic Sea to enjoy the corresponding capital.

Summer weather is the best time to experience the two capitals at their height of beauty. Even in summer evenings one might need a light jacket especially if out on the sea. Winter months can be frustrating and transit of fast boats is often slowed down, in this case one will only have the option of taking a large slow boat to navigate the ice and winds. There are two companies which offer ferry service between the two cities:

Tallink Silja Line:

This company offers seven departures each day from each port (14 total). Trip time is around 2 hours and ferries run from 7:30am till 9pm Monday to Friday with some a different schedule on weekends. Tickets can be gotten for as low as 19 Euros with prebooking and depending on season can range upwards of 50 Euros. Buying online is the best option in advance, but tickets can be purchased at travel agencies, by phone or at the docks too. The overnight cruises on slow boats can be a good option instead of booking a hotel. There are private cabin options available, Star Class which has no seating assignment or Comfort Class which has access to a lounge area with snacks and is used by many on the return trip after having spent the whole day exploring.

Linda Line

This ferry company offers five departures per day from each port (10 total) which range from 8am till 7pm each day. Linda line uses smaller catamarans which make for a shorter trip, but reduces the number of passengers and is more susceptible to weather conditions. Still they are just as easy to book and schedule and provide good access between the port cities. The vessles come into Linnahall terminal at the port in Tallinn.

Getting from the Ports to the respective cities:

Tallinn Port to City Center:

It can be walked in 10 minutes or Bus no. 2 departs from the port’s A-terminal to the city centre and airport approximately every 30 minutes from 7 am until midnight. The price from the bus is 1,6EUR.
A taxi from the terminal to the city centre costs about 5 up to 10 EUR.

Helsinki Port to City Center:

It is an easy walk right into the heart of town, but for those wanting or needing public transport, tram Number 2 is the best option.
