How to get from Don Muang airport to the city of Bangkok

Don Muang Airport is a very feasible option for passengers in and out of Bangkok

Don Muang Airport is a very feasible option for passengers in and out of Bangkok

Even as Don Muang is now the secondary airport in Bangkok, there is still plenty of traffic coming in and out especially with the relocation of the low cost airlines to this hub. There is much discussion and disagreement online in our research as to how much one can expect to pay when trying to get from the Airport to the city. For those looking for how to transfer from Don Muang to Suvarnabhumi see our tip on the free interairport shuttle here.

One may take the local train and the local buses across the road from the airport from anywhere between 5 and 25 baht. These will arrive to the central rail station and other main spots like victory monument. In terms of time and value these options are not very desirable since the buses arrive from a further location and are usually quite full already. The trains run very slowly and usually once an hour, one can be stuck waiting for or waiting in one of these means of transit for quite some time. Should one wish to catch a local bus to Mo Chit, head across the elevated pedestrian walkway out to the main road in front of the airport and get bus 29, 49 or 59 headed in the direction of the city. The benefit of these buses is that they run 24/7.

The most practical and efficient way to get to town is to either take a taxi or a bus from Don Muang airport to the closest BTS/Metro stop, which is Mo Chit. When taking the taxi from the stand outside the airport one will see that a 50 Baht surcharge applies for the driver. The cost to Mo Chit is around 100 Baht give or take a little, but do not allow your driver to tell you it is 200 or as we’ve seen upwards of 390. (This is as expensive as getting a trip across town to the other airport). Insist on using the meter and tell them you know 100 Baht to be the price (plus the 50 airport surcharge). Note if your route includes any toll booths you as the passenger are expected to pay the toll fare.

Recently we have received some updates from travelers regarding public buses leaving from the Airport to Mo Chit. We have been told there is a A1 bus awaiting just outside the terminal, it takes around 30 minutes and the fare is 30 Bhat the bus runs roughly every 12 minutes, service runs between 07:30 and Midnight each day.

Once you arrive at Mo Chit the BTS skytrain and metro will take you wherever you need to go in the city proper for very reasonable fares.

    Hi,

I would like to know how long will it take for the taxi to travel from Don Muang airport to Mo Chit BTS?

I will be arriving at Don Muand airport at about 5pm, which is not a good time i guess.
Is there any airport shuttle to Mo Chit BTS? How long will it take for the airport shuttle to travel from Don Muang to the nearest BTS station?

    Thank you.

  2. Hi Annie,

It takes around 15 minutes to get from DM to Mo Chit BTS. by taxi. There is no shuttle to the nearest BTS station per say, there may be some private companies with vans, but honestly a taxi is the best option even if traffic is heavier at that time, the taxi drivers know the roads well and drive super fast (prepare yourself) weaving in and out of traffic to get you there as quickly as possible.

There are a shuttle bus from DMA to Mochit Bus Station (A1 route). So this bus will pass to BTS Mochit (I mean this bus will through to BTS Mochit)? Can you check this?

    1. Hello Bay,

According to the Bangkok post the A1 Route goes to the Mo Chit Bus terminal this is around a 1.5km walk to the nearest BTS station at Mo Chit. It may be a bit shorter if one moves through the Queen Sirikit Park which separates the two stations.

If you are looking for BTS Access the A2 bus route is your best option, it is further inside the city but there is a BTS Stop located here.

        Hi,

Just to update regarding the airport bus to the nearest BTS station, Mo Chit.

I arrived Don Muang airport and walked out from the airport terminal at about 5.30pm.

There was an A1 bus waiting outside the terminal, indicating that the bus will go to MO Chit BTS station.

The bus fare is 30 bath and it took about 30 minutes to reach Mo Chit BTS station.

        1. Hello Annie

    Dear Admin,

Do you have any website which I can refer to what can I do from 11pm to 6am near Don Muang airport while waiting for my flight?

    Thank you!

    1. Hello Pei,

There are some places to shop and explore near Don Muang like Future Park Rangsit, but the time of day you mention is difficult, only further inside the city itself will you find businesses and street markets open. Your best bet may be to ask airport information if there are any restaurants or shops open nearby at that time.

      Thanks

From Don Mueang Airport going to Vietnam Embassy (83/1 Wireless Street, Lumpini,Pathurnwan, Bangkok ), What is the easiest way/transport to reach the Embassy if I come from Don Mueang Airport?

    1. Maria,

The easiest and fastest way to our knowledge would be by taxing a taxi, as we do not know specifically what bus routes you would have to take and what stops to change at.

Wednesday about 14.15 we arive from Phuket to Don-Muang airport.
We want to go by taxi to Hua-Hin , can you tell us where to look for a taxi for a honest prize.

    Thanks

    1. Hello Ralph,

You best option would be to look for a car or taxi service that allows you to buy a fixed ticket online ahead of time. If you are buying in the airport itself, go with a company that has an official taxi stand, instead of approaching someone waiting outside.

    Dear Admin,

I will arrive to Don Muang Airport in the morning about 9:45 AM. And I want to go the Bangkok Palace Hotel. Can you please tell me if I take taxi how much Bhat I have to paid. And if I don’t take taxi, what kind of transportation I should take and how?

    1. Hello Wai,

The most informed way to calculate your taxi cost would be to call or write your hotel directly. They deal with arrivals all the time and would have the best information on cost of public and private transport to their address.

    Dear Admin,

I am planning for a trip to sunflower field in Lopburi. We will be arriving at DMK airport and I am wondering if there is a way to travel from DMK airport to Lopburi train station. You have mentioned that there is a train station across the airport. Is that the Don Muang station which train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai will pass by? Appreciate if you can help 🙂

    Azra.

  9. Hi Azra,

We have not taken this route before, but some simple online research reveals that one can catch trains regularly from the train station across the street from DMK to Lopburi. Some travelers recommend the minivans that pass by the airport arrivals as well, some have destinations to Lopburi.

  10. Kevin

Been looking all over the internet regarding transportation from Don Mueng to Pattaya by MiniBus (VIP VAN). Most online site quoted THB2200 which I think it is high. I’ve taken before from Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya for THB1500 3 years ago which I got it on the spot as I arrive. Now would it be cheaper if I book the MINIBUS to Pattaya as I arrive Don Mueng or just take up the online booking which is THB2200?

    1. Hi Kevin,

We do not know how much a mini bus is on site from Don Muang to Pattaya. It may be cheaper, or it may not. In your situation we would probably recommend going with the online reservation so you are not stuck without a ride. It may in fact be cheaper on the ground but that is taking a chance, we find it best to travel with most of the transit decisions made ahead of time insofar as possible. We’d love to hear back from you on what you discover so as to share with others, safe travels.

    Hi,
we will arrive at DMK around 11.00 am, planning to go to Ko Samed. Are there any busses starting or passing by to Ban Phe?
Maybe these Vans starting at Victory Monument ?
Were is the best place to catch a bus to Ban Phe, maybe MorChit or at Victory Monument?
    Thanks for information.

    1. Hello, We have not had the opportunity to make that journey, so anything you would read online would be more informed than us on the topic. Typically there is always a taxi, van and bus transport option from Bangkok to beach resorts within a few hours drive. Best of luck!

  17. Rudi

We will arrive at Suvarnabhumi at 7:10 and will have a connecting flight from Don Muang at 16:10. We will immediately go by shuttle from BKK to DMK and check in.
After that we would like to spend 2 or 3 hours in Bangkok? Is there a chance to do so? Which transportation should we use? Problem would probably be our hand luggage – or is there a place at DMK to leave ones luggage?
    Thanks in advance

    1. You certainly will have some time between flights but remember to keep a few things in mind. Most likely you will not be able to check in at the airport so early, counters usually only allow check in a few hours before the flight. There are luggage storage services at Don Muang for 75 baht. You can certainly make your way to the city, but realize it is massive and it takes time to go around. If you simply want to see one thing, or have lunch that will probably be ok, but don’t expect to have time to tour around. Most of your time will be taken up by coming and going.

    hi admin,

How far is it fr Don Muang airport to Asia Hotel Bangkok?
Is there any train to Ratchathewi BTS Skytrain Station?
We will be arriving on 14 Mar. If we were to take bus/taxi how much will it cost?

    1. Hi Salmah,

There are a couple hotels with this name, so it depends on which one you mean. Also the best answer to these questions would not come from us, but from the hotel itself, we recommend contacting the hotel directly in order to get their recommendations on arriving and pricing.

        voyageur

        Hello Lee,

It is quite hard to say exactly how much your taxi will cost because of various fares and being able to calculate your exact hotel location. We can tell you it costs 150-350 baht to cross the city from one airport to the other, so it is probably you taxi fare will be in or lower than this amount. A taxi or bus and metro combination are the only ways of getting there.

Went thru DMG about a week ago and the line to get a taxi was unbelievable! Want to remind folks you can go to the departures area and get a taxi that has just dropped a passenger off! Also, you can walk towards the bus area and flag a taxi as they are driving by – we saw locals doing this. Two ways to avoid the horrendous line.

    Happy to see that you supported many travelers here;

    Need your help;

I should arrive at SUVARNABHUMI at 12:35 noon time then traveling to Phuket from Don Muang at Bangkok (DMK) either at 2:40 pm or 3:20 pm

    – Which flight should I take?
    – How long does it take by Taxi from SUVARNABHUMI Don Muang?
    – How much does it cost by Taxi from SUVARNABHUMI Don Muang?
    – Thanks for the help and apologize for many question, since this is my first visit to Thailand.

      voyageur

      Hello Mizo,

We recommend 3 hours total transfer time between flights. So in that case you will have more chance of success choosing the later flight 3:20 although it is still a little tight. The taxi between airports takes around 1 hour and depending on the type of taxi it can cost from 150-350 baht. I hope this helps, any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Hi Admin,

Could you guide me if there is any other mode of transport than a TAXI at midnight ?

I reach 00″10 and would like to go to SILOM area.

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

The taxi service is the most reliable service from DMK to the city at this time of night. However bus 29 and 59 also run from the airport to places like Mochit and Victory Monument, Train Station etc, however you will not be able to transfer to the BTS Skytrain (Mochit) as it is not running at this time. If going to a specific address like a hotel we recommend the taxi. If you know where you are going or where to walk once arriving in town on a bus then you may prefer this option.

    1. voyageur

It is a good practice to depart at least 3 hours before your flight is departing. A Taxi will be the quickest and most efficient, You can use a bus combination or bus and BTS combo. We will appreciate if you follow us in Facebook and in Twitter

      Hi CY,

Like any major city traffic can be a concern at this time of day. Three hours seems like it will work in normal circumstances, if you can go with more time it is always safer, but 3 hours should be sufficient.

      Hi Anggita,

Your best information for the cost of the taxi would be to contact the hotel. You can always try to check in early. That area is not as close to the city center attractions, so perhaps leave luggage and take the BTS skytrain to the downtown.

When transferring to a particular hotel or location and if you are not able or willing to use public transport we think a taxi will be your best option. Taxis in general in our experience are safe, just use the same caution you would in any big city. Insist on using the meter and only take officially marked taxis.

You can take a short taxi ride to the nearest BTS skytrain station just a few minutes ride, that will be the fastest option out of the airport. From there the BTS is affordable to reach your hotel.

    Hello,

I will fly through Don Mueang to Phuket but my flight will be around 6 am, what do you think would be the most convenient way to come there from asoke station?

Furthermore I will have a flight from Don Mueang to Seoul at 8 am when I come back from Phuket. I can either book my flight in a way that I can arrive the airport around 1 am or 7 am… Which one do you think I should pick, would it be impossible to catch 8 am ?

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Okyanus

From the station the only transit method we are aware of especially at that time would be a taxi.

As for your return flight 7 am seems too tight especially since you will likely have to step out to collect baggage and to check in/get your boarding pass for the flight to Seoul. If you have no baggage and can get your boarding pass ahead of time it may work, but still that is a short time and if your phuket flight is delayed at all you might miss the flight to Seoul.

we will be arriving at DMK at 6.30pm next Friday and need to get to Centra Station as we are staying at a hotel near by and have also booked train tickets from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on the monday evening. Looking at the posts it looks like the train is not the way to go…….maybe a taxi from outside the terminal and negotiate the fare before getting in or tell the driver to use the eter. Does this sound like the best way to go???? any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers Ozbob101

Yes the Metro Station is actually a little far from the airport.
What we have done in the past is to take a cab to the Metro Station, you have to pay the meter plus the toll fee, but still is affordable and Taxis will not take you to an “extended city tour” since there is only one way to get to the Metro Station.
I would ask for the meter if I am going to the hotel, what i normally do is that I contact the hotel to ask what the normal fare is.
Please let us know if you have any other question.

      Hi Deepak,

Siam Paragon and Central world are two of the best and most centrally located malls in Bangkok. Take a cab or A1 bus from Don Munang to Mo Chit BTS skytrain, Take it to Siam station to access the malls. On Nearby Ton Son alley there are many small massage parlors which you can walk in and book all kinds of treatments.

    hai admin,

we will be arriving at DMK at 2.45pm Friday and need to get to waterford diamond apt, khlong toei. how to get there and how muc have to spend for transportation fare to reach there?

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Diana,

You can get there by taking a taxi directly. It is a 29km ride around 45 minutes. Alternatively you can take the A1 bus from DMK to the BTS Skytrain. Once on the skytrain metro you can go to Phrom Phong stop which is the closest to your destination.

    Hello
I need a help or recommendation. My flight at don muang airport is at 11.25 a.m, my plan is using A2 bus. can I use that bus from victory monument to don muang airport? What time is the first A2 bus in the morning? And where I should wait for the bus at the victory monument? Thanks before

      Hi Karinda,

That bus does connect those two destinations normally but the schedule and the location of the stops we don’t have that information. Try the public transport site of Bangkok for more detailed information. their english speaking help line can be handy too.

    Dear Admin,
i will trip to bangkok on 7th March 2016, i’m with my wife and my baby.
my flight will arrived in DMK airport at 4pm, and i will stay in Navalai River Resort, Address: 45/1 Phra Arthit Road,Phranakorn, Bangkok 10200, Thailand.

Do you have advise what transportation should i used from DMK airport to Navalai River Resort ?
if i have to go with Taxi, how much estimated fare to my hotel ?

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Dawam,

It is not really possible for us to give you an estimated fare, only the taxi company will be able to provide that quote, we recommend if you are traveling with any child a taxi will probably be better than bus transportation from DMK. If it helps you to plan the roundtrip taxi fare between opposite airports in Bangkok is around 350 baht.

      Hi Tu,

There are some taxi stands inside the airport that you can pre-pay ahead of time or if you go with a taxi outside negotiate a rate only with an official driver and take one from the taxi line.

We are trying to walk from Don Meuang airport to Phoom House where we will be staying between flights for our upcoming trip. I read that one of the hotels has a bridge that makes the walk shorter… Do you know how that works, and which hotel or what signs we should look for in the airport? Many thanks!

    HI Dear ,

The train is very inexpensive something under 50 Baht. It is very slow moving and doesn’t come all that regularly, so we recommend the bus which is much faster. The train if you choose to use it is across the street from the airport once you exit. We will appreciate if you follow us in Facebook and in Twitter

Really the most direct thing to do is to take a taxi from DMK to the Ekkamai BTS skytrain station. There is a bus terminal there with many buses going to Pattaya. You may find some buses departing from DMK directly but they are likely to be much more expensive.

I will arrived in DMK airport around 5.30pm. Would like to take the train to bangkok city as this is the cheapest way. May i know can the ticket on the spot and will the train punctual always? Besides, if taking the taxi to siam / silom area, how much will it cost (roughly price will do)?

    Thanks for the sharing ~

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

      Hi Pon,

To be honest the train is slow and not punctual. The bus will cost something around 35 baht, a taxi maybe 100 baht at the most. The train is more affordable still and you can buy tickets on the spot, however you may have to wait some time.

Taxi’s are not too expensive in Bangkok if you want to go fastest and for around 250Baht estimated ($8) that is the way to go. Otherwise a combination of buses and trains can get you there for around ($5) but will take longer and be more confusing to navigate. We would choose the taxi option to get to this specific address.

    Dear Admin
Thank you reply at once, But Taxi Service area where is safety for me. i read up to down page that ONE PERSON said like,
—(Went thru DMG about a week ago and the line to get a taxi was unbelievable! Want to remind folks you can go to the departures area and get a taxi that has just dropped a passenger off! Also, you can walk towards the bus area and flag a taxi as they are driving by – we saw locals doing this. Two ways to avoid the horrendous line).
    ANOTHER PERSON
—-( Airport Taxi Counter Rip Off! Don’t make my mistake. Arrived at DM and made the mistake of paying for taxi inside the airport at the Taxi Counter. Paid B820, including toll fees, that the driver never even used, as we did not use the toll roads. Take a bus or taxi outside, not inside the airport and don’t get RIPPED OFF ).
Where is reasonable for me .
    Please Suggest and help me-
    Ni

    1. voyageur
      voyageur

Ni Ni every experience can be different, most of the time when you use an official taxi service with a receipt the driver will behave, but sometimes if you see the driver will not use the meter or if you have paid ahead of time and he will not respect the agreed upon price, you need to be firm and insist on the agreement. In the strange case the driver does not agree, ask to be let out of the taxi immediately and take another. This does not happen often and if it does you threatening to leave the taxi is usually enough motivation to make them stop trying to overcharge you.

      Hello Heryk,

honestly your questions are quite general and hard to answer based on not knowing your budget or situation. We recommend any hotel that offers a reasonable and safe accommodation. Taxis and buses are trustworthy as in any other major city with some risk always. We recommend you take one of the many buses from Bangkok to Pattaya.

      voyageur

      Hi Cynthia,

Traffic jams are common in Bangkok, but they are really not possible to predict. The BTS is usually a good call because there are many trains which move passengers all during hours of operation. We will appreciate if you follow us in Facebook and in Twitter

      Hi Kyaw,

From the Platinum Mall to Dom Muang it will be 40 minutes in taxi an hour and 15 minutes in public transit from platinum Mall. It will be similar times from the city itself. Expect prices to be 150-200 baht in taxi, less than 100 baht in public transit.

      Hi Irene,

A taxi is always an option, most taxi rides into the city are 150-350 Baht, we are not familiar with the hotel so it could be less, but that is an average cost. If you are looking for Bus, MRT we suggest you look at google maps to see if there is a station nearby. Also you can contact the hotel directly to see what they recommend.

i’ll be travelling to BKK again in november. would like to have an update if the A1 bus is still near to the #6 exit?

    1. voyageur

      Hi Annie,

Everything is working as it has before at BKK. The best mode of transit depends on your time and budget. Taxi is of course faster, but buses and BTS work wonderfully in Bangkok and we use them.

    Hi Voyageur,

I will be touching down at DMK at around 12am. I see from the above comments that I may take a bus (A1) from Exit #6 to Mo Chit. Could you please confirm this? It is my first time travelling alone, I would be grateful if you could also please advise on the frequency of the bus and what is the last bus and last train timing? I would not like to be caught in the scenario whereby i am able to take the last bus to Mo Chit but there are no trains serving after 12am.

    Hi Admin!

Thks in advance for your kind helpful advice & sorry for several questions play in head tha wana get yor help.

We (7 pp)’ll be travelling for 1st time to Bangkok, hotels at Pratunam area (Rajathewi road). Arriving DM airport at around 02:30pm.

    1. Wonder can we get sort of like Van tha is more than enough to take up 7pp wt some hand luggages from DM airport transit service or do we hav to pre-arrange wt private Van bfor we touch down at airport? Roughly how much would it costs for Van of 7pp to Pratunam Area? Or
    2. would you advice us to get 2 cabs (each cab for 3pp & 4) & shall get it outside airport is it….”outside” is within airport compound or cross the main road? How much would it costs roughly (in btw how much)for a cab to Pratunam? Or
    3. Will u recommend us to take A1 Bus to Mo Chit BTS via skytrain & drop at Rajathewi BTS Station? Roughly how much would it cost per person?

Greatly Appreciate anyone who had tried their best way bfor fr DMk to Pratunam Area to share their valuable experient.

    THK U VERY VERY MUCH! = )

      Hi,

For so many people an affordable option is the A1 bus and BTS skytrain. The cost should be less than 100 baht per person. Vans may be harder to track down at DMK, but they do exist, you may want to pre book if you want that option. The split taxis will be the fastest and probably around 350baht each taxi. NO NEED TO PAY EXPENSIVE FARE!!!!!

I recently had a trip to Thailand and figured out cheapest way to go from Don Muang Domestic Airport to Bangkok city.

Basically, when you come out of Airport, there is only one exit. And as soon as you come out of that exit right next to you there is a bus stop called A1 and A2. From A1, there is bus going to city every 30 minutes and that too BY EXPRESS WAY…Ticket price is 30 Baht and you can get down anywhere with that price.

Don’t worry, bus looks old but from inside it is good, air conditioned and cheapest.

Get down at Mo Chit bus stop or Victory monument. That is main city. Then you can get another bus or Metro to reach your destination.
