It is a fact that some of the main ski resorts worldwide are in Europe and no one denies that Eastern Europe takes a very important part of this cake too. Czech Republic and particularly Prague are among the most visited destinations around the world but their ski centers are not necessarily well known by foreigners. It’s not due to a lack of beauty or good infrastructure, but more because other big names in the general region have gotten most of the fame. Certainly the ski centers of Czech Republic are well worth a visit. In fact this past week we had the chance to visit Spindleruv Mlyn and we were positively surprised for the magnificence of the place.

Located some two hours NE driving from Prague, Spindleruv Mlyn is in the middle of the Krkonoše National park. Just on the border with Poland and not far from the border with Germany. There are many hotels of all different categories and budgets. The road from Prague is in very good condition and there are many supermarkets, shopping centers and abundant gas stations along the way. For the first part of the trip one travels on very flat terrain, it is only towards the end that one encounters impressive mountains and a beautiful natural panorama more than what the initial experience promises.

In our case we stayed at the Clarion hotel, a good four star property with ski in / ski out facilities. The building itself is very nice and surrounded by gorgeous natural beauty.

In Spindleruv Mlyn There are around 75 kilometers of tracks for the practice of skiing and snowboarding for all kinds of levels with a superabundance of lifts and many ski schools for those who want to take lessons. A great attraction is that everything here is very affordable.

If Spindleruv Mlyn offers excellent ski and snowboard facilities probably one of the biggest attractions are the amazing tracks for cross country skiing. There are around 75 kilometers of tracks in pristine conditions. The tracks are groomed everyday. These are some of the best conditions for the practice of this sport that we have found anywhere. There are tracks for every difficulty and the best part is certainly the amazing views along the paths. For those who just like to relax, there are as well fantastic opportunities for hiking. There is no shortage of restaurants, cafes and local pensions.

Spindleruv Mlyn is a excellent destination for the practice of winter sports, but we are sure that it has to bring excellent opportunities for the practice of outdoor sports and relaxation in summer as well.

Great photos you have there. And I do agree: Czech Republic is a lovely place to go skiing. Your article makes me more excited to undertake a backpacking/ski trip in the Czech Republic that I’ve been planning for the longest time. Can you recommend more sights to see in Prague, Brno, Telc, and Kutna Hora? And perhaps an affordable hotel in these cities where I can stay for a week?

  2. Hi Sylvia,

It is wonderful that you are considering a trip to Czech Republic. Prague is a course an amazing destination whose castle and old town are not to be missed. It is full of museums, antique architecture and wonderful churches. Brno is a classic city with a great scene for the arts and history. Anothertown you could add to your list would be Karlovy Vary. This amazing mineral spring town is home to spas and beautiful architecture. As far as hotels go Prague has a vast array of affordable and international names. Prices overall in Czech Republic are much more affordable than those of Europe. Many good three star hotels have good facilities. One good name that comes to mind is Clarion hotels which has several properties in the country.
