Hotel Review: Courtyard by Marriott Puxi, Shanghai China

puximain

Shanghai is so huge and so urbanly intoxicating that in many ways has a lot in common with any other big metropolis such as Paris, New York or Tokyo. As one of the main tourist destinations of the world the fact of finding a good hotel for an affordable price can be somehow more challenging than in other Chinese cities. The Courtyard by Marriott Puxi has proven to be an excellent call for the frugal traveler with a little more demanding taste than the average low budget visitor.

Marriott offers an incredible portfolio in China, service in their properties is really excellent and the facilities are faultless. Shanghai has some challenges: It is a very big city and much more expensive than other Chinese destinations including Beijing. The market is more westernized and this pushes the standards to a more Western kind of profile.

The Courtyard Puxi is a hotel with an excellent location, it is just steps from the Metro Station (actually from two metro stations) from there it only takes minutes to reach any of the main tourist attractions in Shanghai. The main train station is located just ten minutes walking and using the metro one can reach any of the two international airports in no more than an hour.

puxi2Trains are one of the main means of transportation in China. These are affordable, reliable and comfortable, but to get the tickets for the hour and class one wants, this can be challenging, the good news is that very close by the hotel is located an office that sells these tickets, this office is not crowded at all and it is easy to get what one is looking for. In this process the Courtyard concierge can be an excellent orientation. By the way, we once again found in this hotel that the concierge was very helpful and always eager to assist.

The Courtyard is a very modern hotel, it is what in any Western market would be considered an upscale five stars property. The lobby is luxurious and welcoming. Our check-in was done fast, and we were upgraded to an executive suite. It was a very spacious room with modern décor and a fresh look, the generous soaking tub was especially appealing. We were particularly impressed by the executive lounge. We found that most courtyards in China offer this kind of lounge, and it is a great thing because an excellent breakfast is served every morning and drinks and hot and cold snacks are served every evening. The entrance to the lounge is complimentary for guests staying in an executive floor or for guests with higher tiers in their loyalty program.

There is as well an superb gym, very well equipped with modern machines. The lap pool even when it is small is really beautiful and a great place to relax. There is as well a little spa. We really found that this Courtyard is an excellent place to stay in Shanghai. One will be surprised by how affordable this hotel is and the good standards it offers to the visitor for such prices.
