Some of the most direct and affordable means of transferring directly from Shanghai Pudong airport to the major city of Hangzhou just a few hours south is via a long distance bus at the airport or the intercity bullet trains. This is a recommendation on how to utilize both services.
There are two main bus routes that run daily to Hangzhou from Shanghai Pudong and they of course make the return trip as well.
- Shanghai Pudong Airport – Wulinmen Ticket Office Central Hangzhou
The best option if one wants to reach the downtown portion of Hangzhou directly is to take the bus running to Wulinmen Ticket office 武林门民航售票处 390 Tiyuchang Road, Chinese: 体育场路390号. This is centrally located just next to Wulin Square and will give one direct access to public transport, hotels and metro. The price is 110 RMB which one can buy from the long distance bus offices at the airport and at the stop. See where to find the offices below for more details. Here’s the schedule:
Shanghai Pudong Airport – Hangzhou (8:40, 10:10, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00,17:00, 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, 21:00)
Hangzhou – Shanghai Pudong Airport (5:30, 6:10, 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00)
2. Shanghai Pudong Airport – Hangzhou Dragon Sports Center (黄龙体育中心)
This bus option takes visitors to another section of the city about 3km from the Wulin downtown area. The Dragon Sports center is just next to the Huanglong Tourist Hub (3, Huanglong Road). If staying in this district there are many hotels around and it is well connected via public transit and affordable taxis if one needs further transit. Cost is 110 RMB for a journey. The schedule is here:
Dragon Sports Center – Shanghai Pudong Airport: 7:00, 8:30, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00
Shanghai Pudong Airport – Dragon Sports Center: 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 15:30, 17:30, 19:00
How to get to the bus in the airport:
International flights arrive from terminal two and national flights from terminal one. Both terminals are connected in their central portion by a long corridor referred to as “central” from whichever terminal you are exiting follow this corridor towards about the halfway point between both. One will see signs for the metro, other trains and local buses but follow the signs to the “long distance buses.” Exit the Airport from Gate 4, second floor of Terminal 2. Then walk along the gallery and find the elevator of “Coach” (长途大巴), not Airport Shuttle Buses （机场大巴）. And you will find the buses there on floor B1. Pay in cash only and proceed through security to the waiting area. From there be attentive to you ticket time and the signs for the upcoming bus departures. There are no bus numbers, just the times at which they leave so pay attention to that.
Train transit options between Pudong and Hangzhou:
To get to Hangzhou one may also take the Metro into Shanghai directly from the Pudong airport to either Shanghai South or Shanghai Hongqiao train station. A ride to either of these can last around 45 minutes. The bus option mentioned above has no real transfer, but the train option is actually faster and more affordable. Metro ticket is 8 RMB for a one time ride and then bullet trains which depart every 20 minutes or so cost around 75 RMB and get in just under 2 hours. This brings the total time of the journey to less than the three-hour mark which is what one can expect from the bus ride in normal traffic. The overall decision is really about if you want to transfer at all and where exactly you hope to get into in Hangzhou.
